In the Evening (Tutorial + Tab)
This is my version of the traditional blues tune In the Evening. It is a 12 bar blues played in the Key of E, in 4/4 time. It is a fingerstyle piece played on a guitar in standard tuning. Above is a video of me playing the tune along with the tab. In this post I will give some advice on playing the tune.
Here is the tab for the music

Playing Advice
- Triplets and Triplet Feel - The tune is played with a triplet feel meaning that the quavers or 8th notes are played as split triplets. However, the tune also incorporates numerous triplets which are just played as straight triplets. This can be tricky to get the hang of initially especially when the music changes between the two. Listen to the powertab or watch the video if you need help with the timing of these.
- Full Barre - A significant number of bars in this tune have to be played with a full barre across either fret 5 or 7. These are marked on the powertab. If you are not comfortable playing barre chords then this tune could prove very tricky.
- Picking Pattern - The tune employs a standard fingerpicking pattern with the thumb playing the bass notes at regular intervals of a quarter note. As with most of these blues tunes in the Key of E, the thumb picking pattern doesn't alternate back and forth between different strings and just plays the same string during the individual bars.
- Slides - There are numerous slides within the music. These are optional and I just added them because I liked how they sounded
- Hammer Ons and Pull Offs - Most of the triplets within the music are played with a hammer on or pull off in them. This makes the quick succession of notes easier to play and gives them a good sound. I would recommend playing these as they are written, just make sure you get the timing correct as it is easy to mistime them. Listen to the powertab or watch the video if you need help with the timing of these.
That is about all I need to say on this piece. If you are comfortable playing fingerstyle guitar and using a full barre, then this piece shouldn't be too troublesome.

Neil
